Understanding Monero

⏱️ 30 minutes reading

Before starting, it's important to understand what Monero is and why it exists. Monero (XMR) is a cryptocurrency focused on privacy, decentralization, and fungibility. Unlike Bitcoin, all Monero transactions are private by default.

✅ Today's Tasks

  • Read "What is Monero?" on the official website
  • Understand the difference between Bitcoin (transparent) and Monero (private)
  • Watch an explanatory video (5-10 min)

💡 Key Concept

Fungibility = every unit of Monero is identical and interchangeable. Unlike Bitcoin where some coins can be "tainted" or refused because of their history.

2

Install your wallet

⏱️ 20 minutes

A wallet is the application that allows you to receive, store, and send Monero. It's your decentralized "bank account". To start, we recommend a simple mobile wallet.

✅ Today's Tasks

  • Download Cake Wallet (iOS/Android) or Feather Wallet (PC)
  • Create a new wallet
  • Write down your recovery phrase (25 words) on paper
  • Find and copy your receiving address

⚠️ Important

Your recovery phrase (seed) is the KEY to your money. NEVER share it, don't store it on a computer or in the cloud. Paper only, in a safe place.

3

Get your first XMR

⏱️ 30-60 minutes

Time to get your first Monero! Several options exist depending on your situation: swap from another crypto, direct purchase, or even mining.

✅ Today's Tasks

  • Choose an acquisition method (exchange, swap, P2P...)
  • Make your first purchase/swap (even $5 to test)
  • Verify that XMR arrived in your wallet

💡 Tip

For a first test, use an instant swap service like Trocador or Exch. If you already have Bitcoin or another crypto, you can swap it for XMR in minutes.

4

Send and receive

⏱️ 15 minutes

Now that you have XMR, learn to use it! Sending and receiving Monero is simple, but there are some important concepts to understand.

✅ Today's Tasks

  • Create a second wallet (to test sending)
  • Send a small amount from one wallet to the other
  • Understand transaction fees (~0.00001 XMR)
  • Observe confirmation time (~2 minutes + 10 confirmations)

💡 Good to know

Monero transactions need about 20 minutes to be fully confirmed (10 confirmations). Fees are very low, usually less than $0.01.

5

Secure your funds

⏱️ 45 minutes

Security is crucial. Today you'll learn best practices to protect your Monero for the long term.

✅ Today's Tasks

  • Verify your seed is properly written and stored safely
  • Make a backup copy in a second location
  • Test restoration: delete the app and restore with seed
  • Enable a PIN/password on your wallet

⚠️ Restoration Test

This is the most important step! If you can't restore your wallet with your seed, you'll lose everything. Do this test BEFORE having significant funds.

6

Use Monero

⏱️ Variable

Monero isn't just an investment, it's money to use! Discover the ecosystem of merchants and services that accept XMR.

✅ Today's Tasks

  • Explore the Monerica directory to find merchants
  • Make a first purchase (VPN, domain, gift card...)
  • Or donate to an open source project

💡 Purchase Ideas

Popular services accepting XMR: VPN (Mullvad, IVPN), domains (Njalla), gift cards (CoinCards), eSIM (Silent.link), coffee (Gratuitas)...

7
