FAQ
❓ FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about Monero.

What makes Monero different from Bitcoin? +
Monero is private by default. Unlike Bitcoin where all transactions are publicly visible, Monero hides the sender, recipient and amount of each transaction using technologies like Ring Signatures, Stealth Addresses and RingCT. Additionally, Monero is fungible: each XMR is identical and interchangeable, unlike bitcoins that can be "tainted" by their history.
Is Monero really anonymous? +
Monero offers very strong privacy by default, but "perfect anonymity" doesn't exist. Monero's privacy also depends on your practices: avoid reusing addresses, use Tor, don't publicly share your transactions. For normal use, Monero offers excellent privacy protection.
How do I store my Monero safely? +
Golden rule: Write down your recovery phrase (seed) on paper and keep it in a safe place, never on a computer or in the cloud. For significant amounts, use a hardware wallet (Ledger, Trezor) or a cold wallet like Cupcake. For daily use, Cake Wallet or Feather Wallet are excellent choices.
Why does my balance take time to appear? +
Monero requires 10 confirmations before funds are unlocked (~20 minutes). Additionally, if your wallet wasn't synchronized when receiving, it must scan the blockchain to find your transactions. Check that your node is synchronized and that the restore height is correct.
Do I need to run my own node? +
No, it's not mandatory. You can connect to a public remote node. However, running your own node improves your privacy (no IP address leak to a third party), strengthens the network, and gives you total sovereignty. If you have ~100 GB of disk space available, it's recommended.
How do I buy Monero without KYC? +
Several options: P2P exchanges (Haveno, RetoSwap), crypto ATMs, in-person purchase, or exchange from another crypto via services like Trocador. Check out our Buy crypto page for a detailed guide.
Can Monero be traced by governments? +
Monero's cryptography makes chain analysis extremely difficult. Ring Signatures create ambiguity about the origin of funds, and Stealth Addresses prevent linking transactions to a public address. No public evidence has shown that Monero has been "broken". However, human errors (sharing information, KYC exchanges) can compromise your privacy.
Can I mine Monero with my computer? +
Yes! Monero uses the RandomX algorithm which is optimized for CPUs, not ASICs. You can mine with any computer. The easiest way is via P2Pool (decentralized mining). It's generally not financially profitable, but you support the network. See the tutorial: Solo mine with GUI.
